I’m quitting Facebook… temporarily. (An ongoing mental health experiment)

Yeah, I’m giving up facebook… temporarily.  I will not-so-scientifically fill the following scientific journal as I progress.

Abstract

I’m trying to see how long I can go without:

1. Checking my facebook

2. Posting anything on my facebook

3. Reading e-mails sent to the account I use to have messages from Facebook sent to

I will try note and chart (yeah right, charts) my emotions, mental state, and daily activities and any changes thereof.

Introduction

This all began while working at one of my jobs.  My co-workers always lovingly poked fun at me for how much I was on Facebook.  They observed that I constantly posted, checked and read Facebook.  Today, Wednesday, March 23, 2011, I stated that I wanted to be a technical director for a period of one of the professional sports games I work at.  The person who normally runs that position jokingly said that would occur only if I gave up Facebook.  So, I did.  That was around 3:00pm and I still haven’t checked my Facebook.

Basically, I want to Forrest Gump this shit and see how long I can keep this running.

Materials and methods

  1. My/anyone’s computer
  2. My/anyone’s iPhone
  3. Any other device used to log in and use Facebook and its services

Observations

3/24/2011

Sitting here at around 12:45 am on 3/24/2011, I tried to look back at what I was thinking while the experiment started.

Whenever there was a downtime during my day, I noticed that I would habitually just look at my phone and navigate directly to the Facebook app icon.

Related, I noticed that while browsing the Internet, I would habitually move the cursor towards the Facebook shortcut located on my Firefox shortcut bar.  Consequentially, I have deleted that button off the toolbar in hopes that I don’t just click on it by habit.

Talk about being addicted.  Like a moth to the flame, I’d naturally migrate towards Facebook. I almost feel like I’m going through withdrawals.  I know what withdrawals are like since I’ve tried quitting cigarettes several times.  That’s pretty bad.
